2025 MMDC Alumni Panel: Advice for College Success

At Minds Matter DC, we believe that one of the most valuable resources for students preparing for college is hearing directly from those who have walked the same path. Our 2025 MMDC Alumni Panel brought together former program participants to share their real-life college experiences, offering our current students a chance to ask questions, gain insights, and feel more confident about their own transition to higher education.
Firsthand College Insights
This yearβs panel featured six MMDC and MMNYC alumni, all currently excelling at colleges and universities across the country:
π Axel β University of the District of Columbia (MMDC)
π Vanessa β American University (MMDC)
π Aileen β Howard University (MMNYC)
π Jordan β Howard University (MMNYC)
π Arianna β Trinity Washington University (MMDC)
π Aniya β Howard University (MMNYC)
The event was structured in small group settings, with two alumni rotating between classrooms every 30 minutes. This allowed students to have personalized conversations and ask direct questions about what to expect in college.

Key Takeaways
Throughout the panel, alumni shared powerful insights that helped current students feel more prepared for what lies ahead. Some of the biggest takeaways included:
- Be proactive about time management. College is fast-paced, and staying organized from the start will help you stay ahead.
- Get involved on campus. Clubs, organizations, and study groups are great ways to build a support system and make friends.
- Utilize campus resources. Most schools offer tutoring, financial aid assistance, and mental health support, donβt hesitate to use them!
- Budget wisely. College life comes with unexpected expenses, so tracking finances and applying for scholarships is key.
- Donβt be afraid to ask for help. Professors, mentors, and upperclassmen can all provide valuable guidance.

A Great Experience for MMDC Students
For many students, this panel was the first time they had a chance to speak candidly with college students who share similar backgrounds and experiences. Seeing MMDC alumni thriving in college made the dream feel even more attainable.
We are incredibly grateful to our alumni for taking the time to give back and share their journeys. Their wisdom and encouragement will undoubtedly help the next generation of Minds Matter DC students feel empowered as they prepare for college.
Thank you to our alumni for sharing your time, experiences, and advice!
